About the Sable Island Institute
The Sable Island Institute (SII) is a transdisciplinary, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation, and celebration of Sable Island’s unique natural and cultural heritage. Our work spans environmental research, biodiversity monitoring, historical documentation, arts and culture, public education, and outreach initiatives.
With our office located in the historic Gatekeeper’s Lodge in Point Pleasant Park, we support both mainland and on-island activities, collaborating with scientists, artists, and community members to promote the protection and appreciation of “all things Sable.”
About the Role
As the Programs Coordinator, you’ll play a key role in supporting the Institute’s operations and helping shape its future during an exciting time of growth. Reporting to the Management Committee, you will wear many hats—from managing day-to-day administration to developing and supporting innovative programs on and off the Island.
You’ll be joining a small but passionate team, currently led by the President, and a network of dedicated volunteers. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys building systems and relationships, and is eager to contribute to meaningful work with long-term impact. You will work out of SII’s office in Halifax with the option for working remotely one day a week. The role also includes 1-2 working visits to Sable Island per year.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and support a variety of programs and projects related to Sable Island, including budget development, contract management, scheduling, logistics, permits, inventory, and procurement.
- Assist with fundraising activities, including grant writing, prospect research, and reporting.
- Manage the SII Halifax office, and support field operations including management of safety protocols and environmental guidelines.
- Manage SII’s general communications, including email inquiries, newsletters, and outreach to supporters.
- Develop and manage membership and donor databases.
- Maintain and develop SII’s website and social media presence.
- Provide administrative and operational support to the President and Board.
- Support SII’s various committees and partnering meetings.
- Assist with planning and organizing public events, meetings, and fundraisers.
- Collaborate with and support SII’s volunteer network.

- Demonstrated success in grant writing and fundraising support.
- Proficiency with website management tools (e.g., WordPress) and social media platforms.
- Competence with budgeting, basic financial tracking, and reporting.
